Gosh, Cindi. We cross-posted. I don't want you to think I'm ignoring your post. I'm glad you escaped major damage. That really was a scary set of events.

There was a third one, but it started knocking down all of the supports it had (4 arbors!), so I took it out last year. The two remaining ones are well supported, one by 3 arbors and a garage roof and the other by a gazebo, a fence, and an oak tree.

Those banksia are incredible in your yard! I've tried twice to grow them here and they just stay small. How long does that stay in bloom? I would think you could sell tickets to people to come see that in bloom. Wow.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.

Maybe they need a warmer zone to get this big, Cindi. They stay in bloom for weeks, maybe a month? Then it's all over until the next year. I actually get a very, very sparse rebloom here in fall, but the rose is supposed to be a once-bloomer.

I often get a small second bloom in the fall from my white banksia and last year Seven Sisters (another once bloomer) continued to spit out scattered blooms all summer. I guess she enjoyed the drought?

Thanks for the warning, Toni. Been looking at landscape fabrics and will ignore that one. Sticking tongue out

Cindi, glad no damage at your place. News today reported 108 tornadoes confirmed so far for Saturday and **90** of them were in Kansas.

Maybe they do like drought? Quoting from Southern Arizona Guide: "Reportedly the world’s largest single rose bush lives in Tombstone, Arizona at the Rose Tree Inn, 4th and Toughnut. Commonly called the Lady Banks, the “lady banksiae” a white rose, came from Scotland in 1885. It covers over 8000 square feet. It blooms in the early spring and is Thornless. For a fee you can view it, picnic, or get married. You can also buy a rooted stalk and take home some history."

So is anyone propagating plants from seed this year? Here are some photos of one of my propagation tables down in the basement.

Wow, you have a lot going on there. I try to start as little from seed as possible. Much prefer to buy starter plants when possible.

I really love growing from seed. Of course, I buy plenty of starter plants, but it's so enjoyable to start seeding in February and March - it gives me the feeling that I'm gardening at least two months before I will actually do any 'real' gardening outdoors. I have a small cold frame where I can harden off some of the plants - getting a 4-to-6 week head start on the growing season.

I tried doing the seed thing once. Was a total disaster & I spent more on seeds & materials then just buying plants.

...and if you've ever seen how many potted plants Sue has, you'll know she's going to be very busy for a LONG time ! LOL

Last weekends gale force winds snapped my Eureka tree rose off at the base. That was one of my favorite roses, too ! I hate it when that happens Sad

Oh, I hate that! That happened to my Flower Girl tree rose just before a garden club was scheduled to tour my garden two years ago. So frustrating!

Zuzu - I remember you writing about that storm! I can't have rose trees here.. they wouldn't survive at all. But I've lost real trees to winds, so I know what that's like!

Thanks, guys. I had good germination rates of all the seeds, with the possible exception of the verbenas. Only about half of them germinated, and they just sat there for several weeks after sprouting their first two tiny cotyledon leaves, without growing more than 1/4 inch. But I noticed yesterday that most of them have finally put out two additional "real" leaves, so I'm heartened by that. I love verbena spilling over stone walls and cascading down slopes, and am really hoping these take. The rudbeckia also took forever to start growing after germinating, but they're doing well now.

Good luck with those pots, Sue!

I tried to start some mimosa seeds. I read the instructions, poke a hole, soak overnight, then plant. I poked a hole (VERY hard to do.. that seed case was impossibly tough!), soaked overnight, and the next morning they were covered in white fungus. Yuck! I threw out the whole thing. What did I do wrong?
