I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. E. B.White

I feel I am a opened minded person but they give me nightmares. Rolling my eyes.
Kinda glad they do not live in my zone.

Are they good for the garden?

They are harmless, really...they look scary, but the tarantulas just want to be left alone. I don't see them very often.

Cinda, just like all other spiders, they are carnivores and eat insects. Good insects as well as bad. The larger spiders including tarantulas, can also eat small frogs, lizards, etc; so they eat the beneficials as well. But they do keep the insect population controlled, that's probably the best 'good thing' they do. And Linda is right, tarantulas most likely want to be left alone.

For some reason, I suspect it has to do with a very mild winter and an early spring, we are having an invasion of brown recluse spiders here. Those things terrify me.

This is the type of garden spider I have here, they always scare me till I know where they are . I do not harm them, and even sometimes throw a grasshopper into the web to watch them wrap it up.

Now the wolf spiders that come inside the house in the fall Glare I let the cats take care of.Don't mind them outside but not in MY house.

Should be a very spidery season this year, compared to the extreme drought we had last year! Yeah, I wouldn't like to have a lot of those brown recluse around either...dangerous!

Thanks, Sharon

I don't think I have ever seen a brown recluse in person, and I'm glad. I have seen the kind of damage they can do to the flesh. When I was a child my Father was bitten and still has a scar. Probably why I have a fear of spiders.

We have black widow and some other spiders in our garden. I just make sure to watch out especially as I go near the rocks or as I go out the door, sometimes the black widow is just by the door..looks menacing, but I know they help me with the other bugs around. I like how the spiders make their intricate webs Smiling

Hurray! That middle one was really fuzzy-wuzzy! I know a lot of people are afraid of spiders, but I'm okay with them...outside....unless they grab my butterflies!

I had this Green Lynx Spider hanging around my White Texas Star Hibiscus for a couple of years.
They usually hang around the foliage to blend in like the first photo, but this one also like the flower.

Nature's that way, isn't it? This is becoming a very buggy year where I live. The spiders are around, but their population hasn't gotten really large yet. I think that is coming, however!

I try no to be too scared of spiders..as long as they are not indoors Big Grin Outdoors, fine with me..I consider them natural bug control..the equalizer of sorts.. Big Grin I think they often caught me unawares and that startles me alot Big Grin
