For a spectacular flower show in your garden, herbaceous peonies (paeonia) in bloom can’t be beat. They’re a long-lived perennial, they make wonderful cut flowers, and when they’re done blooming the foliage provides a beautiful backdrop to other plants for the rest of the growing season.

I have about 24 peonies that were left by the previous owner of our house. I love seeing those spears poking up from the ground, and cutting huge bouquets to bring indoors! The ants like to hitchhike on the opened blooms, too, so my husband isn't as fond of them inside. Whistling

I've often wondered if I should be fertilizing or doing something else for them, but they've just been happily blooming along with no real interference from me! I've added beds in front of them, to make them the back border, and they've seemed happy enough to have all the company. Hilarious!

I love to bring bouquets of them inside too. If you can get out and pick them early enough, there's less chance of ants being on them.

One really nice thing about them is that if you're lucky enough to have many of them, it can be a pretty long season of peony blooms.
