Thread OP

I live near Memphis TN.

Toyed with gardening a little for the last few years. I have a couple of raised garden beds and some chickens...

What are some of the must own books.

Vegetables, small fruit trees / bushes. Small scale farming (Live on an acre)

Thanks for the recommendations!

Hopefully some other folks will chime in here with small farm recommendations, as I do mostly ornamentals. For edibles, I just use my old Georgia MG handbook. Their recommendations for North GA track pretty well here in Knoxville, and there's good info on typical pests and diseases. Don't forget to check with your local Ag Extension office for free publications and advice.

My shelves are loaded with books on ornamental horticulture, but one I pull out frequently when designing is The Southern Gardener's Book of Lists by Lois Trigg Chaplin. Other favorites are plant specific books like The Color Encyclopedia of Hostas (Greenfell), Gardening with Conifers (Bloom), Japanese Maples (Vertrees, I like the old 2nd edition better than the new one).

My best advice before buying any book is to see if your library has it. Too many books that promise to be the "Complete Book of ..." end up being very general, "coffee table" books when what you want is good, practical info.

Month-By-Month Gardening in Tennessee and Kentucky by Judy Lowe is helpful especially if you're just starting. I also like Tough Plants for Southern Gardens by Felder Rushing.
