My hubby moved over a planter, raked over the mulch under it, removed the landscape fabric and found these things growing under. At first I thought they were mushrooms..but it felt firm like a potato or a turnip. This area of the yard was just clay dirt before and I did not plant any rooting bulb there either..

Anyone knows these?

I *think* I found one in a BIG pot this morning. Thought it was a "petrified" puff ball...but perhaps one of those..will have to go back and see if I can find where I pitched it.

Thanks woofie! It does seem to look like it Since I do not know what to do with them, I placed them in one of my other containers. Interesting to find stuff around when you least expect them.

Hey, that's just a wild guess, based on a google search for "potato-like mushrooms." And that was only because I know that some mushrooms are fairly solid, but the only ones I've actually encountered were growing on trees or fallen logs. Have you tried cutting one open?

Could be just about anything! I couldn't find anything in the description of that particular mushroom to indicate if it has a firm texture like you originally described. Mushroom ID is a difficult proposition. I spent a fair amount of time with a mushroom hunting/identification group associated with the LA County Museum many long years ago and even the experts have difficulty sometimes. Assuming, of course, that this IS a mushroom!
