One of our neighbors on the court that backs up to ours had the most beautiful hostas and she sprayed them religiously with Liquid Fence to keep the deer away and last week she told me about the deer divouring all of her hostas the one day she didn't spray. Some of her hostas were the size of a car tire..She called the man that does all her digging, heavy planting and prunning and asked him to come and dig them all up. He told her he'd be able to come one day this week but didn't give her a definate day. Well, he called her on Sunday night and said he get to her hostas the first thing yesterday morning. Her son-in-law is dying of cancer and things are in an uproar there now and that is why she didn't get a chance to spray and Bambi was waiting for that midnight buffet. She called me yesterday morning and said she had picked out two nice size ones for me that Bambi didn't eat all, put them in a plastic bag, gave it some water and set it out of the sun and I could come and get them. I took the one large one and divided it into about 6 hostas. The other hosta was mostly stems, no leaves did Bambi leave on that one. Potted them up and placed them in the only shaded area I have, under the dogwood tree by A/C unit. Sprayed all or the flowerbeds and put wrought iron patio chairs in the path going behind the A/C..will water them again today. Hope I have better luck keeping Bambi away from them. She didn't know the varieties but said she had kept the plant ID tags somewhere. I wasn't about to ask her for those with the family critis she was having. It doesn't matter what variety they are to me..I'm not one of these people that collect plants..

I did learn from a YouTube video from the owner of NewHampshirehostas.com that hostas do have names..Great video and website..check it out. He uses beer hops for compost for all their plants..think he mentioned the brand and he said hostas love it and do well planted with those mixed in the soil. Remember coming back from Baltimore when I was young along the road where a beer factory was and smelling those hops..smelled so good.

Hostas are very hardy. I have deer attack most every year. I have hundreds. One morning I went out and they had ate every one in the garden. Hostas do not care they come back every year.

You are better planting them in the ground in good soil. It takes a bit more care growing Hostas in pots.

I grow a lot of hostas, and I would like more information about Liquid Fence.
Is it a brand name? What kind of product is it?

It is aways prudent to have more than one method of keeping the deer away.

Yes Liquid Fence is a brand name and can be found at Home Depot. Deer Off is another brand that also works well.

Too bad that it wouldn't work with turkeys who like to fly in & scratch up plants.
