Nice work, Sandy. I can't say I've ever boiled it for a long time, but I know there is more than one way to do things. It would still be worth it. Turmeric is just so healthy and good for you. I even take it in capsule form.

The more I talk to people who use turmeric medicinally, the more I think I'll have to try it. I just didn't feel comfortable listing any conditions it might treat. Let us know if you decide to boil and dry it!

I've blanched, dried and ground it. Well, "blanching" in this case was about 30-45 minutes or so and not your usual "a few minutes in boiling water". So I suppose it was somewhat boiled.

I've heard turmeric touted to treat a lot of things. I just take it in capsules because it is so good for you. I take a lot of things for that reason.

I've read lots of articles and studies concerning the health benefits of turmeric. There are almost too many to name. I did find this, a sort of synopsis of those studies:

I've seen nothing negative about the use of turmeric as a supplement, either in foods or in capsule form, but I do see evidence of a lot of benefits.

Tee and Sharon, I know there are many health benefits from using turmeric, but I don't have personal knowledge of them. For me, it would be like writing about performing brain surgery. I have lots of information, but no knowledge of my own doing it. I do think one of you should follow up and write an article about the benefits of using turmeric for your health!

I don't have first hand knowledge either. I've taken it for a long time, but only as a preventative. I've never had anything that needed curing, I guess.

Same here. Thankfully. Except for a miserable candida albicans overgrowth in the gut 20 plus years ago ... but got that fixed with an anti-fungal and LOTS of natural supplements and things. And especially a woman doctor who believed that everything isn't due to menopause or because you are whacky in the head. She recognized the symptoms when others couldn't, understood completely, and took care of it all. Even approved of the alternative treatments. What a big blessing that was!!

You're fortunate you found a doctor that recognized it. You should write an article about using turmeric medicinally, really.

It is very common in our recipes and is nearly a must in everyday dishes. It's my favourite too. Home remedy for several simple troubles... adds colour to dishes... I can go on!
I'm growing a few from last year... next year will be better. Rhizomes were given by a friend.

That's a healthy looking plant, Dinu! Do they die back seasonally there, as they do here?

First time I grew last season - started mid season when I got it - it did not do all that well. I removed the rhizomes and kept them in for two months or so and then planted them with better soil in May when the rains had just begun. Yes, they do die down and that is the time to remove them. This should happen in a few weeks from now.

If you remember, please post a photo of them after you dig them up. The ones I bought recently are much smaller than the ones I bought two seasons ago.
