I got this lithops in March this year..observing its growth..interesting to see how it has changed in about 2 months time:
Here is how it looked like when I first got it in 25 March 2012:

Then I re-potted it a couple of weeks later:

I took this photo today 08May2012: I have noticed the exterior leaves are drying out but the middle leaves are getting taller, looks okay, but I am worried, is it beginning to decline?

Anyone observed this in lithops that you care for? My lithops are in a west facing window that gets filtered to dappled light.

i love lithops and last year decided to get some. spent a small fortune on a small selection to be sent to me. got them planted and looking good. but they got massacred by my then two year old son. he pulled each of the lithops up out of the bowl and just mangled them by squashing, stomping or just breaking them up.

yeah i wasnt very happy. i might get one or two plants i really like, this time and just keep them in a normal pot in the kitchen with the rest of my plants. the kitchen and the spare room is the only safe haven for my plants.

I never cared for one of these, but I do know Echeveria will grow like that with too little or too much sun. I would try placing it in a southern window or placing it outside for full sun during the day and see if that helps. Also, if the leaves are drying out you might want to dribble a little water on it every now and then: our jades love this (came from humid greenhouse)! Just don't do too much or else they will rot Crying . I would try to replicate the place you got it from's humidity and light too.

Hope this helps, as we don't know much about these plants Sad .

Hello, I am not an expert on Lithops, but I have read a good deal about them, and I remember reading that if they get too much water they will elongate. Could this be the problem? Also read that if you in doubt about watering DO NOT! They should not be watered at all during the summer--unless they are shrivelling and then MIST THEM. frostfairy

Hello Im new here Just want to say hello.
I read the lithop question, I collect too, fine specimens there, I see too much water, this make them grow up and out. Not enough sun will do this as well. These as you are aware are from deserts and they are used to being treated as rocks the name " Living Stones" however will adapt to your life style as well. I live on the coast and aside from a bit of winter cover from frost n rain, they are great. I have my baby toes that was wet for 2 or 3 months back in behind things , man I almost lost it. But is fine now. If you would like more info on these I can help, I have many of these. Also This plant drinks all year waiting for hibernation, the months of aug thru sept, its hibernating so water every two weeks or when you can see its all the way dry where soil pulls. If you give to much water as well the tops will crack and split causing scars to your babies....I think by looking your doing a great job. lithops are hard to care for, I lost many , however remember that less water for these is way better even if it hurts you.... hope I helped...Lori

Hi Lori! My lithops seems doing okay for now..I guess the succulents are the ones having a heyday with our soaring heat. But today is nicer compared to a few days ago, bearable low 80's with nice Delta breeze. Will look forward to seeing your snaps! Green Grin!

I got some Lithops seeds last summer, I am happy to report that one of them has finally cracked open and showed its first true leaves! Here's a few sneaky snaps of them this morning! They were inside on my kitchen windowsill but they are a bit too leggy for my liking so I am guessing that they are reaching for light! So out they go, and we'll see what happens! Smiling

Here they all are today.

My lithops are looking ghastly, like with crusty crunchy tops....not sure if this is normal winter temp adjustment while indoors. The body feels firm to touch, but it just looks so tired...compared to the the Split Rock which is just plump and keeps on splitting, I hope I have not over watered this one causing multiple splits Rolling my eyes.

I think they are okay, tarev, especially if they are still firm.

Here are some of mine down in the garage right now.
