I think the best threads are like a river. As they age, they meander. They wander from topic to topic, always staying on-topic for SOME of the readers and bemusing others.

More like a conversation among a group of patient adults, allowing things to drift in and out, to fill the quiet spots in the original conversation. Less like an encyclopedia entry or deposition.

It deposits rich food for thought, hither and yon, as it changes course and creates oxbow lakes and islands.
