We do indeed get snow up here but it is not often consistent thru the winter we lose the snow and have freeze/thaw cycles. The bed I plan on putting them in is raised and has a bit of gravel mixed in the soil which gives excellent drainage. There are already some rudbeckias, a white daisy unsure of what it is, some coneflowers and daylilies which all do fine over winter. By the way the soil in this bed is usually on the dry side.
If you want to be happy for a lifetime plant a garden!
