Wow, you must have good insurance! About a year and a half ago when I still worked (and had PPO through my employer) I slipped and fell down a few stairs. DH had to carefully carry me to the car - whenever I moved any part of my lower extremities, it was like daggers. I knew there wasn't spinal cord damage (based on the pain) but I wanted to be sure there were no bone chips.

Anyway, after an xray and sitting in a room for basically 3 hours, they finally gave me a vicadin (after they made sure I wasn't pregnant. try doing a pee test when you can't move...). A week later the bill...$3600. Got a separate one from the doc for $150 (he was obviously proud of himself as I saw him for about 20 seconds so he could come in and poke me in the ribs. literally). My out of pocket costs were around $750. DHs coverage is better..,.when he tried to take his thumb off and the doc stitched it back on, his bill was about the same amount, but there was no out of pocket for us.
