Marilyn: I know it must be hard when your DH had been flying for Comair for 26 years to have them go out of business.
I's so unfortunate and it has happened to so many companies over the past 20 years! I worked in the mortgage department at a federal S&L that shut down years ago. I know that bank was not in financial trouble but it was at the time when so many banks were shutting their doors or being taken over by other banks (the same thing happened to another savings and loan where my mom worked) and I've seen it happen to many businesses over the years. So many small companies and mom and pop businesses have gone under because the mega companies come in and take over. At the bank where I worked the mortages were all sold off to other companies, and another bank took over the other accounts. Some of my co-workers hoped to transfer to the "other" bank but everyone was told they would have to submit an employment application (just like when seeking any job) to be considered and the few who were hired did not start in the same position they'd been in for years or anywhere near their old salary! I'd only been with the S&L for 5 1/2 years but I felt so sorry for some of my co-workers who'd been there for 20 years or more. I'd planned on taking some time off before looking for another job but haven't ever gone back to work. I've always said things happen for a reason and at the time my dear mother in law was having the beginnings of dementia and moved to assisted living so I was blessed to be able to spend the last years of her life with her and then my own mother began having health issues so I was able to travel back and forth to south Fla. every couple of weeks to spend time with her before she passed.
I know it must be difficult for your husband when aviation jobs are scarce right now ... I hope something comes along soon. If there are any local flight schools nearby maybe he could inquire to see if they need flight instructors. I'd think with his experience they'd jump at the chance to get him! The salary probably wouldn't be anywhere near what he made as a pilot for the airlines but he'd be able to work at what he loves - flying. Yes, pilots can only fly commercially until the age of 65 and then it's mandatory retirement and I know it would be very hard to start over just to have to retire in a couple of years. He will be eligible for social security next year which is a good thing but I bet he wishes he could be flying.
Sounds like y'all had a short courtship if you met in June and got married in October and this year you will be celebrating
17 years ... Congratulations! : And,
Happy Birthday to your husband too!
