Good sleuthing, Greg. I read the whole article and am sure that is what I saw in S. Cal. It was growing around the steps to our apartment and I saw a lot of it that looked like it was deliberately planted around overpasses along the freeway where erosion control would be needed. It was one of two plants that really stuck in mind after moving back up here. The other was the Bird of Paradise plant (Strelitzia sp.). It was a common garden plant down there. I have a couple that I stated from seeds but the darn things just won't bloom for me!
