Please don't be in tears.
There are solutions as outlined in the previous posts.
Squirrels do not like loose dry peat or sawdust.
Even ordinary pepper or talcum powder----anything which makes them sneeze.
Mulching is good too.
I also lay the rose clippings among perennials---they do not like walking on them.
