I understand what you are saying Greg. We have several things going on though.
Some plants are renamed because the original name was misplaced. We have some nurseries/suppliers doing this openly. NOT good
Some are given names because they are new plants from seedlings. SMG & Wild Ginger Farm have raised some amazingly beautiful new semps. But they name them and give the information that it is from their breedings. VERY good.
Sometimes there are name changes due to mistakes in translation from one language to another. These usually are easy to sort out. As in the plants of European origin, say, with the name beginning with Zilver, which translated into Silver. Thus the confusion on semps like Silver Andre, Zilver Andre, and many others.
I by no means discount the name S. 'Dark Horse' from SMG. SMG is a very reputable supplier of premium sempervivum and other hardy succulents. I have many plants from them, and will continue to get new ones from this source.
We have many named sempervivum in the database that we don't have information for. Some dating way back. But it is always useful to see if we can dig back in the past to glean more information.
