Daffodils in a ring around the base will be good, too. The daffodils help deter the harmful grasses and don't hurt the tree at all. Bee Balm is also a good fruit tree companion because it helps attract pollinators, especially honeybees.

Comfrey is a good ground cover because when chopped and left to rot it provides a lot of nutrients to the top of the soil.
