You can also wintersow annuals if you live in a fairly warm climate. Most years it works pretty well here for hardy perennials, hardy annuals. Tender annuals and tender perennials start blooming later here when wintersown than those started indoors, but it usually works pretty well. Last spring was cool and it didn't work as well as usual.
