Yesterday was a good day in spite of the Cooper's Hawk. He didn't return after I scared him off, but he did return briefly this morning and disappeared when I knocked on the kitchen window. I am hoping these scare tactics will keep him (or her) away. The good news from yesterday was that I had a pair of mourning doves in late afternoon and they stayed until sunset. The sun was a glowing amber color which helped with the pictures. Here are four pictures of them feeding on the ground in a spot where the snow had been swept away.
Later in the afternoon just before sunset I found this little doll napping on some patio furniture on our back deck. She was so at rest, and it looked to me like she was trying to sleep. I am truly happy to have these birds as guests since they are among our favorites. The fading sunlight almost gave her a golden glow.
I had a front-end loader come today to help remove snow or at least pile it up out of the way. This gave me additional bare ground to spread sunflower seeds. And to my surprise around 3:00 pm today I counted five doves: Three on the north side and two on the west side of the house. Maybe they are taking notice of the bare ground & seeds.
