Letting the soil warm up a bit before watering sounds like a very good idea. I inadvertently nearly killed off a few plants by watering when the soil was too cold. Fortunately, I spotted the problem before things were too far gone and was able to repot most of them in dry soil.
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.
