While Lilium martagon is on the downhill side of blooming, other lilies of the martagon section are in full swing.
Here are some of my hybrid results:
These are from a few different Lilium 'Super Tsing' seed pods that were open pollinated. I had very few compatible suitors back when the union occurred (2008). It's pretty clear these were pollinated by the natural hybrid that often masquerades as Lilium tsingtauense - but is really a hybrid of Lilium tsingtauense and Lilium disticum (and/or Lilium medeoloides).
The best ones...
I had done several crosses of Lilium martagon 'Amelita' (graciously received from Ramona) with pollen from Lilium 'Super Tsing' and had very poor success: only one pod grew. This one I had labeled as a dirty pollination. It had been open and unprotected (from pollinating insects or hummingbirds) for about an hour before I pollinated and covered it so no further contamination could occur. It's a little early to speculate on what the parent(s) might be. The variety is stunning. For most of these, this is the first time they have bloomed. As Super Tsing is half Lilium martagon (of unnamed genetics), it is possible there was no contamination at all. But either way, I'm really excited! I've been doing a lot of pollinating now, especially with that last one!
