I think it is less intimidating if one simply uses the genus name, e.g., That's a rudbeckia named Goldilocks. You might know it as black eyed susan. Even though you know for sure it is Rudbeckia hirta 'Goldilocks' that may simply be too much information for a non-plant person to process. You are still providing accurate information, but perhaps not baffling the recipient with too many unfamiliar names.
