Well, according to my dubious memory of a conversation with the folk in the Sherwin Williams store back in SoCal many, many, many years ago: It's ok to put water based paint over oil based primer, but not vice versa. The rationale as explained at the time was that oil based paints dry to a very hard surface over which you can pretty much paint anything. But water based paints stay somewhat soft and if you put oil based paint over it, it tends to pull and cause the paint underneath to peel. Sounded good at the time; but I have no idea if that was accurate, or, if it was then, is it still accurate now.
Heh, I'll be putting this to the test in a bit, as I have a pot I used oil-base primer on and I plan to put an acrylic design over it. If I ever get to it, that is. Rolling my eyes.
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.
