threegardeners's blog: Funny How Things Turn Out

Funny how things turn out isn't it?

When I got tired of/too old for working in a factory I got a chance to go back to school.

When given the choice of what to be re-trained for i thought to myself..."wouldn't it be cool to work in a nice, air-conditioned office for a change?"

I've always been fond of/good at numbers so I decided to train for an Accounting Clerk diploma.

I got a beautiful chance to be an Office manager at a nursing home. I was in training for the exceptionally well paying job.

The funny thing is, I discovered that I am absolutely, as a human being, totally ill-equipped to work in an office environment. I just can't do the "fitting in" thing with a bunch of office women. I'm not adept enough at light, meaningless conversations. I'm nowhere near fashion-wise. I can't "lunch with the managers", preferring to be by myself, alone with my thoughts, when I eat. There should be a course somewhere that one could take to prepare them for the office environment. My people skills suck...at least when it comes to dealing with the same people on a day-to-day basis...forever.

I passed on the well-paying Office managers job.

Now I'm working in a gas station. A nicely air-conditioned gas station at that. Here, when I only have to see a person for maybe 2 minutes, my people skills excel.

Go figure...
