Maridell's blog: Creatures in the backyard...mostly small!

June 27th - This baby bird spent some time on our covered grill. It had been windy (very, between 65-75 mph around the area) the night before so I wondered if this little fella got displaced...after an hour or so he left...but not before leaving a little calling card on the grill.

July 9th - Found this wasp in the Bee Balm. I guess he was in the right place!

July 9th - This cicada gave himself away...I would have never seen him as he blended into the side of a fountain on our deck...his "voice" gave him away.

Photo of spider taken on July 13th. Per JRsbugs possibly Whitebanded Crab Spider - Misumenoides formosipes. The echinacea is Summer Sky:

July 25th, I saw this caterpillar on the top of our yard waste garbage can. Poor thing! I was not sure what was going on but JRsbugs at http://cubits.org/buglife/ clued me in...parasites (likely wasps) will have a meal when their eggs open, sigh.

July 28th Swallowtail on some Obedient Plant:

August 1st - Heat index today was 110. The last two days I have seen bees coming and going from my bird bath. A few tidbits of information from the Bee Keeping forum https://garden.org/thread/view/4107/ :

August 8th: This guy was huge, I was a bit afraid to get close but wanted the picture.

August 9th: This wasp (?) comes in for a crash landing a few feet from me. It proceeds to drag this cicada and them climb up the side of the house. He crashed again and I decided not to take any chances of him coming after me and came indoors.

August 23rd - saw a hummingbird a couple nights ago at my saliva's along the back of the house. Soon as I brought out a camera he was gone. Today there are two hummers out in my garden visiting the Obedient Plant, Mexican Mint, Bee Balm and Echinacea. No way I can get a photo of them from here and don't want to go out and spook them. Sigh.

September 6th - a deer went through the yard...a highly unusual occurrence in our neighborhood. Can barely make it out in this photo but his head is sticking out of the neighbors tomato plant:
