greene's blog: Getting enough exercise?

There is absolutely nothing garden-related about this post unless tripping over briars and brambles counts. File this under "Getting old is a lot of work".

This week, two of my dogs visited the veterinarian just for routine stuff, nail trim, weigh-in, etc. Even though George has lost over 2.5 pounds in three months, the vet seemed to think George is still a bit overweight and strongly recommended reducing the amount of food.

Nope, since George mostly exercises his barking, he just needs more exercise. Chico was listening to what the vet said and was also reading my mind while I added a mental note to - "walk George more often".

That was Thursday. On Friday, guess who forgot to close the gate before letting the dogs outside? Yep, that would be me. Duh! All four dogs started running after the rooster and hens. What a noise!

Since I can no longer run and most days even walking normally is a bit difficult, chasing four dogs is nearly impossible. But the rest of the neighborhood was either at work or inside with the A/C cranked up so it was up to me to bring the dogs home safely. My big dumb dog Coqueta was a good girl, never left the yard, and came back immediately.Thumb of 2021-06-26/greene/483cca

I put her inside the fence (and yes, this time I actually closed the gate!) and headed out to look for the other three dogs. Jack and George had stopped chasing the rooster and hens when they discovered the chickens in the backyard coop - it was easy for me to scoop up the dogs one at a time and toss them inside the kitchen door.

Chico was a whole other problem. Where was he? How far had he run? I clapped my hands 'til they were numb, hollered Chico's name 'til I was hoarse, and got lots of walking/limping/groaning done while trespassing in yards. Heard some commotion down the road; saw the neighbor's three German Shepherds in one corner of their fenced yard barking and wagging their tails. Ah, there's Chico! But when I called his name, Chico turned and started running down the street; guess he was headed to Walmart.

Someone in a car saw what was happening, slammed on the brakes, Captain America leaped out of the passenger seat, his feet hitting the ground at warp speed, ran faster than Superman, lifted Chico and returned him to me, then disappeared the way most superheroes do without waiting for a reward, just waving at us from the car window as they drove away as I hollered thank you.

I have no idea how many calories George burned on his new exercise regimen but Chico and I had enough exercise for a week!! No roosters, hens, dogs, neighbors, or superheroes were harmed although quite a few plants got trampled.
Here are Jack, George, and Chico.
