greene's blog: Orange you glad it's Monday?

I volunteer for an organization that distributes food, tons of food to anyone who shows up. A local produce distributor called the director and offered an entire truckload of produce - fresh yellow squash, zucchini, strawberries, and a tone of lovely oranges, plus lentils, canned black beans, health snack bars, and so much more. For almost 3 hours I helped to unload the truck along with 2 other volunteers. This was a pop-up giveaway with no advance advertising yet there was a steady stream of cars arriving. One by one we ran out of items until all that was left to give away were 8 cartons...really heavy cartons of oranges. Tote that barge! Lift that bale! Ugh! (Did I mention that I'm 72 and disabled?)

The next day my legs were sore from walking up and down that truck ramp lifting bags and boxes...well, mostly my calf and butt muscles were angry with me but a couple of days of rest will take care of that, right?

That was Tuesday. On Saturday and again on Sunday morning I drove all the way into town to pick up 'leftovers' from Panera to be distributed to the homeless community in our area. The aroma of the fresh bread and the cinnamon buns permeated my car.

And today is Monday. There was a quiet little knocking sound. Not a single one of my four dogs was alerted to the knocking. That' because the person was knocking on the side of the house instead of the front door. Maybe the dogs thought it was the rabbit or armadillo that hang out rent-free under the house...who knows? It could have been the raven...nevermore! Anyway, I dragged my sore muscles out of the comfy chair to answer the knocking. It was my neighbor from across the street and her cousin.
They were bringing me a lovely, big, heavy bag full of...

you guessed it -

ORANGES!! Hurray! Blinking Grumbling D'Oh! Hurray! I tip my hat to you.

And now that we've had a good laugh, I should mention that no one person could eat that many oranges. I messaged the director of the food giveaway and asked permission to deliver this bag or sunshine to the person who brings food (especially those lovely Panera cinnamon buns!) to our local homeless community.
