casiPAZone6B's blog: My First Square Foot Garden

Posted on Mar 30, 2013 6:24 AM

So, as a kid, we had a really big garden on the farm.  Nana and Pop, Mom's parents, lived next door and helped a lot.

Many, many moons later, I moved to suburbia, in Northeastern PA and have finally taken the time to start my own little piece of Heaven on Earth!!

About 6-8 months ago, I started doing research on the best type of gardens for the suburbs.  I found a wonderful book by Mel Bartholomew, and bought it on Amazon within a week!  Mel developed the Square Foot Garden concept and I fell in love with the idea.

I spent about 5 months or so doing research, reading, and of course, talking to Mom!  I found the perfect place on the property to have the garden and a few weeks ago I went at it.  After I dug up the sod, I had to put gravel down.  My perfect spot would even be more perfect if the water from my neighbor's downspout didn't run into my property.  The soil, called "Mel's Mix" is a mix of different kinds of maure, soil, and perlite.  I absolutely love putting my hands into it and can hardly wait for the last frost to hit so I can put my "kids" in there.
