New name
Posted on Dec 4, 2020 12:35 PM

Hello. It's occurred to me that changing the name of this site from ALL THINGS PLANTS to
NATIONAL GARDENING might feel exclusionary to gardeners in other countries.
I LOVE hearing from gardeners all over the world. Not just Americans. Please join us.

Happy New year to all! 2021 promises to be better, hopefully.

Catching up
Posted on May 22, 2020 10:22 PM

Well, it's May22 of 2020. I'm 83, still married to a wonderful fellow and I'm a grandmother
of 5 now. The youngest will be 3 next week. It's been a long time since I've added to my blog.

This is the year of the fearsome Covid-19 virus, and our world, the entire world has changed. Masks, hand-washing and social
distancing has become the norm for several months now. I'm so grateful that we have land to garden, both flowers and vegetables - since we are
expected to shelter at home. So much to be grateful for, when there is so much misery in the world. So much suffering.

I'll write more when I'm inspired. For now, stay safe!

This and That
Posted on Nov 4, 2015 4:30 PM

The iris forum is the first thing I look at in the morning. It's such
a pleasure to share a love for this beautiful flower that gives so much
and asks for so little. It's helped me over rough patches.
However, I feel blessed. I live in a beautiful part of the world, with a
kind husband, and four adult children that I'm proud of, and 4 grandchildren
that I dearly love. Oh - and mustn't forget our 3 dogs and 2 cats - all rescues.
If I have any complaints it's that my body is breaking down a bit after nearly 8 decades. Shoulder joint and
knee pain. I don't want to go through any surgery, so some Aleve and a Vicodin
once in a while help me get through the day. My husband does most of the heavy
lifting. I'm glad he's younger than I am ! Together 35 years.
If the drought ends, I'll be even happier. If the world is at peace, happier still.

Enough for now. Life is good...I'm grateful.

I don't know if I mentioned that my husband and I have been doing eldercare at home with my very elderly mother.
She's lived with us for nearly 3 years after breaking her hip. She moved from Florida to California to live with us. This
past year she has been totally bedridden - an invalid - as her health declined. Her heart was very weak, she had COPD, and
she was on oxygen. We gave her round-the-clock care.
Two days ago , at age 98 and a half, she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
She was a beautiful woman, inside and out, and a remarkable pianist.
The irises were something she looked forward to.
She is and will continue to be, missed.

Connecting with gardeners
Posted on Jun 19, 2014 11:38 AM

Hello. I probably shouldn't be taking on anything else, like a gardening blog, but I'd like to become part of this community of gardeners.
I'm in my 70's and still work most every day as a studio potter - making dinnerware, planters, and basic shapes for my husband to add his sculptures.
Here's an example of what we do:

We market our work at local galleries and juried art shows.

We bought our land 28 years ago and we're so glad we did! This valley has since become a desirable place for vineyards,
and the price per acre has increased tremendously.
Because we work at home, we also are the caregivers for my 98 year old mother.

As you may see , I have a very busy life. What I've found this year is that my flower garden keeps me sane. (my husband has his vegetable garden that feeds us). When life gets
too stressful, I walk out into the garden to see what's blooming - the irises, the peonies, the dahlias, and now I'm adding to the day lilies. Their beauty fills me with joy. I'm happy to have found the All Things Plants site.
