I was walking around the Dougherty Garden today and was thinking about taking a picture of all the Staghorn Ferns. I have a small one attached toan Areca palm tree, which is the most recent starting for a Staghorn Fern. Another Staghorn Fern, which was taken from the original, large Staghorn Fern, was attached to a Solitaire Palm Tree. Finally, the large Staghorn Fern, which has been in the Dougherty Garden for many years, has been in a large terra cotta plastic pot for the last few years. I plan to clean it out one day after I clean up the garden for the winter. The last picture is that of a few Tillandisas that I found outside my doctor's office that dropped from a tree. Enjoy.
This year is the first year that I had a large bunch of seed bracts on the Florida Thatch palm tree. I'm learning as the palm tree matures and starts putting out palm tree seeds. Last year's seed bract was just one and this year's seed bracts are six or seven in numbers with hundreds of seeds. The seeds are light green in color and about 1/4 inch in size. As the seed matures, they turn white. I collect the white seeds as they turn white and placed them in this pot that I have in the pictures and wait to see how long it takes for the seeds to germinate.
This is the first year that the Bottle palm tree put out seed bracts. Actually, the seed bracts have been coming out on the Bottle palm tree for the past twelve months. The very first one is the only one with a huge array of palm tree seeds. It took months for the seeds to form after these small little flowers bloomed. It seemed like forever for the seeds to actually turn color. As the seeds turned color, I took a few off and placed thm in this large plastic pot and we'll see how long it takes for the seeds to develop.
I have the Bottle Palm Tree in the Dougherty Garden for many years and last year was the first time that I was able to find a seed bract that burst out from the palm tree. I thought that it was going to be a couple of months and that I would be picking up Bottle Palm Tree Seeds. It was in May of 2018 that the first bracts appeared on the Bottle Palm Tree. It was in 2019 that the seed bracts started to appear with small green seeds within the bracts. It was during the last of August that the seeds started to turn a different color. I'm picking them off as they turn color.
Today, I took the stems from the many Walking Iris plants that I have planted all over the Dougherty Garden. I was in the process of cleaning the weeds out and took the time to remove all the stems from the Walking Iris plants because I'm started to get a lot of them in the Dougherty Garden. The above picture is from about thirty stems that I removed.
