This book sat on the shelves at Barnes & Noble for several visits before I thought to pick it up and give it a glancing look. The photos garnered immediate attention... not so much because they were beautiful... but because the garden in them was simply stunning. An entrance garden, water garden, open walks, a shade garden and an extraordinary dry garden... each portion of the garden displaying plants lots of us are familiar with... but combined in ways I had seldom seen before.
Reading a bit in the first chapters I learned that Beth Chatto and her husband had developed these garden areas... and that she had also managed to win a Gold Medal in ten consecutive years at the Chelsea Flower Show.
This immediately became a book well worth reading... with photographs that beautifully illustrated the garden principles Ms. Chatto had developed over the years.
I was lucky to "discover" this book in the early 1990's... and in all the years since it has been a constant and treasured reference. I hope you have an opportunity to "discover" it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
