It would be ludicrous to think that anyone who loves and grows Japanese maples is unaware of JAPANESE MAPLES, by J.D. Vertrees. When it was originally published in 1978 it was virtually the only authoritative reference for this exotic group of small trees.
In those days it was mind-boggling to contemplate the incredible number of Japanese maple cultivars reviewed in this book. In central Oklahoma a gardener in the 1970's was probably lucky to find two cultivars available for sale... Bloodgood and Crimson Queen.
By the 1990's things had improved considerably. Thanks to growers like Iseli Nursery in Boring, OR we were able to offer the gardening public Fireglow, Butterfly, Sango Kaku, Sharp's Pygmy, Red Dragon, Shaina, Seiryu and a few other maple cultivars.
These days, with the internet an established way to shop for plants, a great many Japanese maple cultivars can be purchased by gardeners.
The amazing thing is that this book has been and still is ahead of the curve. It still has information on cultivars that range from difficult to impossible to find in the trade.
Mr. Gregory has added an enormous amount of information to the original 1978 publication...
If you want to research these trees... you simply cannot find another publication that covers its subject as thoroughly as this one.
And if you never have owned or grown Japanese maples I can almost guarantee this book will make you want one... or two... or a whole bunch of them.
