Use regular pliers to pull weeds that have long tap roots, especially sticky ones like briars. Put the nose of the pliers right at ground level to grab the weeds. I find them very good to pull the many baby oak trees that fill my garden each year.
Keep a bucket of oily sand in a handy place to stick your tools in to prevent rust.
Use wet layers of newspapers around plants to prevent weed growth.
