[ Aromatic Aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium 'October Skies') | Posted on May 24, 2017 ]

Aromatic aster 'October Skies' is tough as nails and a beautiful addition to the fall garden. In Tennessee, it can bloom well into November.

[ Japanese Anemone (Eriocapitella hybrida 'Robustissima') | Posted on May 24, 2017 ]

This anemone is useful for its late bloom -- in my Tennessee garden, it could bloom into late October (my photo above was taken 10/28) -- but be aware that it can be a real thug. It will try to take over the world!

[ Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia) | Posted on May 24, 2017 ]

Red buckeye will often go dormant long before most trees, so don't be alarmed if your tree drops its leaves in what seems like the middle of the summer. It will come back next spring just fine!

[ Hollyhock (Alcea rosea 'Creme de Cassis') | Posted on May 24, 2017 ]

The color on this alcea will vary with temperature -- it tends to bloom darker in cooler climates.

[ Limestone Adderstongue (Ophioglossum engelmannii) | Posted on May 24, 2017 ]

This small fern can be found around the edges of cedar glades under the shade of surrounding brush and trees. As its name suggests, it prefers shallow limestone soils.

[ Small Bluets (Houstonia pusilla) | Posted on May 24, 2017 ]

Small bluets are commonly found growing in or around the cedar glades of Tennessee.

[ Scented Geranium (Pelargonium 'Gooseberry') | Posted on May 21, 2017 ]

On this variety, the variegation seems to "green out" as the leaves age. Only the newest leaves show much variegation, at least on my plant.

[ Hosta 'Mighty Mouse' | Posted on May 21, 2017 ]

'Mighty Mouse' and 'Frosted Mouse Ears' are extremely similar cultivars. However, some reputable websites (including Hallson Gardens and Plant Delights) claim that the light edges on 'Mighty Mouse' are a bit lighter than on 'Frosted Mouse Ears' when they are grown in the same lighting conditions.

[ Hosta 'Yellow Polka Dot Bikini' | Posted on May 19, 2017 ]

The leaves on this hosta go through a remarkable color change as they age. In the spring they will emerge with wide yellow margins and a dark green center -- but as the year progresses, the margins will become dark and the center will fade, making it look like an entirely different plant.

[ Philodendron 'Painted Lady' | Posted on May 19, 2017 ]

The leaves on this plant change color throughout the life of the leaf. In a good clone, the leaves will start out bright yellow with slight green mottling. As the leaf matures, it will gradually accumulate more and darker green mottling. By the time the leaf is old, it will be mostly green. Don't ever buy a 'Painted Lady' unless you can see the bright new leaves on the plant being sold or on the seller's stock plant; some poor clones will never show the bright yellow on the new leaves.

[ Canna 'Stuttgart' | Posted on May 18, 2017 ]

This canna sunburns easily because of the white leaves, especially if it is kept on the dry side. It is safer to keep it in a shady or semi-shady area; also, providing plenty of water, even placing the canna's container in standing water, will help with sunburn issues.
