[ Rydberg's Goldenbush (Ericameria obovata) | Posted on August 29, 2022 ]

Ericameria obovata is a small shrub that belongs to Asteraceae (the Sunflower Family) that is endemic to (or only found in) the U.S. state of Utah. It can usually be found growing either in shallow soil on, or in cracks and crevices directly on bare rock outcrops and cliff sides. Within Utah, Ericameria obovata is found primarily in the Wasatch Mountains in addition to other adjacent mountain ranges including the Bear River Range, the Oquirrh Mountains, the Canyon Mountains, the Lakeside Mountains, the Stansbury Mountains, the Deep Creek Range, the Traverse Mountains, the Cedar Mountains, the Crawford Mountains, etc.
On a county-by-county basis, the species has been reported from Beaver, Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Juab, Millard, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele, Utah, and Weber counties. I have personally seen this plant in the wild in Cache, Morgan, Salt Lake, and Utah counties.

[ Roundleaf Buffaloberry (Shepherdia rotundifolia) | Posted on July 24, 2021 ]

When I first ever saw this plant in Zion National Park in the US state of Utah, I was immediately mesmerized by its striking beauty. The leaves are small, round, and curled inwards which enhances this shrub's spectacular and almost unnatural metallic shine. One thing that has baffled me however is this species' notable absence from nurseries and garden centers. In my opinion, it amounts to a crime that it is so difficult to get your hands on this gorgeous shrub!
