[ Russian Sage (Salvia yangii) | Posted on April 6, 2024 ]

The notes suggest rabbit resistant. Here on Cape Cod, the zillions of rabbits will gnaw on everything and they eat my sage. I assume its rabbits as the stems are cut in way that looks like someone took a knife to it at 45 deg, nice and clean. Then last year they started on my roses. And not just the newer shoots. Didn't go after the older woody stalks but chomped off some 1/4 inch stems. But of course didn't eat those. Uuuugh...I hate rabbits.

[ Zinnia | Posted on January 21, 2023 ]

We love Zinnias. We've got a bed along a warm side of the house by the garage. It's maybe half full of various perennials and the rest has spring bulbs and such that are gone by early summer. In the past we've put in annuals, which is OK, but last summer we planted zinnia seeds. Amazing results. I bought a big sack, which seems to be an economical way to go, and planted them in a fairly dense way. They grew pretty quickly and made a thick colorful carpet in the area. We more or less scratched the seeds into the surface and kept them moist for the week or two it took for them to get going. Only problem we had was that someone ate a bunch of the sprouts. I think it was rabbits or chipmunks. So I reseeded and covered the whole patch with a wide mesh net used for berry plants and left it so the plants grew through it. After the plants got going we never watered the bed and it was a fairly dry summer, so they are very tolerant of dry weather. I would guess they may have been fuller with more water but still came out beautiful. Highly recommend for a nice very colorful carpet.
