[ Hazel Alder (Alnus serrulata) | Posted on August 2, 2020 ]

This tree is pretty, but I have to say it is the bane of my existence in the summer! It grows along the banks of every lake that we fish and it is FILLED with spiders (maybe long-jawed orb weavers - I'm no spider expert). These spiders flatten themselves vertically along the branches so you don't even see them until the tree gets moved and they starting running along the branch. This is fine until you have to go into the tree to retrieve your fishing lure. I don't mind spiders, but I certainly don't want 5-10 raining down into my kayak with me!! As a bonus, the spiders can walk on water. So if you flick them into the water to avoid squashing them, they can just run right back onto your kayak.

Long story short, I recommend viewing this tree from a distance in the summer :)
