The beautiful, hibiscus-like blooms on an okra plant stay open for one day. Okra is an annual in more temperate climates, as the plant can not survive cold winters.

My grandparents call this plant "Japonica". I have one in my yard that has failed to flower for several years. I've been doing some research on pruning this bush and found that the options are either:
1.) prune in the spring after it flowers, or
2.) prune in late winter, during dormancy.
(Pruning in winter would remove any flowers for that year.)
