Small, low-growing shrub from the Richtersveld in South Africa where it grows on quartz slopes often protected by other succulents or rocks. It exhibits heterophylly, where the 2 pairs of leaves it grows look different. The first pair is often cone-shaped and protects the second pair during the dormant season in summer. The second pair looks like bunny ears. This species and the entire genus are commonly stated as difficult, however, I have not found that this plant is difficult to care for.

This is one of the Madagascar Minature Euphorbias, which are a group of miniature trees, being closely related to E. ambovombensis, E. decaryi, E. cylindrifolia and E. francoisii. The species has crinkly leaves and flowers freely. This species can be considered a more sun loving and a faster growing version of E. ambovombensis or E. decaryi, as well as having smoother skin than E. ambovombensis. This species is Critically Endangered, only known from Cap Saint Mary in Madagascar. This species requires full sun, and generous watering in the summer. It goes dormant in the winter. This species is a good choice for succulent bonsai.
