[ Turk's Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii 'Pam Puryear') | Posted on October 23, 2017 ] I found this variety at a local nursery late this spring. I planted it in part shade and it did wonderfully - with many blooms and some fruiting. Unfortunately, late in August it took some heavy deer browsing, which it is still recovering from. I have saved all the seeds and hope to grow a few more, as well as take some stem cuttings next early spring...assuming no issues overwintering. |
[ Texas Betony (Stachys coccinea) | Posted on October 22, 2017 ] I also ended up growing this in full sun. For me, it struggled much of the summer and did not grow extensively. As we've gone to fall, it's perked up a little and has rewarded some patience with some fresh blooms. I probably will move it to someplace out of the direct sun next year. |
[ Pride of Barbados (Caesalpinia pulcherrima) | Posted on July 27, 2017 ] Received this plant last year with pending blooms and it did fine in direct sun and Texas heat. Unfortunately, the hard freeze killed it and I had to replace with 2 smaller ones this year in the same spot. Worse, these have not yet bloomed at all...and my wife is very envious of others' prolific blooming. |
[ Shrimp Plant (Justicia brandegeeana) | Posted on July 27, 2017 ] I planted this plant this spring in a bed that receives mostly shade. It has done great, blooming multiple times. I'm told the pollinators like it but I haven't yet seen any hummingbird or bee activity by it. I did take a cutting about a month ago, checked on it today and it has nice roots and looks great - so I am hoping to have a couple more next year! |
[ Echinopsis Hybrid (Echinopsis 'Huascar') | Posted on May 15, 2017 ] Also called Trichocereus Grandiflorus. Takes full sun well with minimal water. |
[ Pride of Barbados (Caesalpinia pulcherrima) | Posted on May 14, 2017 ] This plant grew pretty rapidly for me. However, I've had a lot of difficulty getting this to germinate from seed. Scarification is a must. |
[ Sunflower (Helianthus annuus 'Cinnamon Sun') | Posted on May 14, 2017 ] Beautiful flower, relatively small grower but deer will eat the budding flowers |
[ Lamb's Ears (Stachys byzantina 'Silver Carpet') | Posted on May 14, 2017 ] I've also not had spreading issues. In our Texas heat, during the hottest/driest weather it can look awful. Give it a good soaking and it comes right back to life within 12 hours. |
[ Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora) | Posted on May 14, 2017 ] Deer will definitely eat the flowers and sometimes munch on the leaves. I found growing them from seed very easy with high germination rates. |
[ Turk's Cap (Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii) | Posted on May 14, 2017 ] It has done well for me as an understory plant and as important, the deer have so far left it alone! |
