[ Flowering Cherry (Prunus 'Okame') | Posted on February 18, 2024 ]

Apart from the difference in flower color and shape to another common cherry blossom, Prunus x yedoensis, this variety also exhibits a somewhat denser branching habit than that of Prunus x yedoensis, also with denser nodes.

[ Dayflower (Commelina) | Posted on December 15, 2023 ]

The blue coloration of Commelina is a good example of copigmentation. Commelinin, the dye involved, is a combination of both anthocyanins, flavones, and magnesium ions.

Anthocyanins are usually responsible for colors ranging from blue to red-purple in some plants, while flavones are usually colorless or extremely pale yellow.

Both are flavonoids, which are a group of water-soluble pigments. Flavonoids are phenols, meaning they have a hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring. Phenols are secondary metabolites in plants.

In summary, copigmentation is the idea in which anthocyanins are reinforced by the presence of other colorless flavonoids (in this case, flavones) and/or ions (in this case, magnesium ions).

[ Catmint (Nepeta 'Early Bird') | Posted on August 17, 2023 ]

Early Bird is very short and compact compared to Junior walker. sadly, it did not bloom very well the spring of 2023.

[ Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus Graceful GrassesĀ® King TutĀ®) | Posted on June 29, 2023 ]

This cultivar of Cyperus papyrus is quite large and vigorous. In two months, this plant can grow for a small 4 inch pot to a towering mass of pom-poms. This cultivar is almost twice as tall as Prince Tut. So, if you want a smaller-sized similar-shaped Cyperus, Prince Tut is probably a better choice.

[ Dwarf Papyrus (Cyperus prolifer 'Cleopatra') | Posted on June 29, 2023 ]

Single mature "heads" of Cyperus prolifer 'Cleopatra' with ~5 inch long stem segments attached were able to propagate upside-down in tap water in under 5 days. That is faster than almost any other Cyperus I have ever grown!

The plant itself is also quite nice and compact. This form of dwarf Cyperus is smaller than Cyperus prolifer Queen Tut by a few inches.

[ Bladderwort (Utricularia flaccida) | Posted on April 20, 2023 ]

This plant (inconsistently) produces nectar/dew on flower scapes.

[ Sour Orange (Citrus x aurantium 'Seville') | Posted on April 6, 2023 ]

This is a very common tree used in street-side or courtyard landscaping in Spain (Particularly Seville, as the name might suggest).

It has fragrant white blooms and pretty large orange fruits. The fruits have the general citrusy fragrance, and smell a little more sour than a regular orange when cut open. Despite the particularly nice smells and looks of this tree, its fruits are extremely bitter and sour. Not very good for eating.

The trees are quite dense in foliage, and grow quite well. Generally the scent of the blooms is not strong enough to be smelled unless you stick your head into a tree.

[ Chinese Hickory (Carya cathayensis) | Posted on February 1, 2023 ]

[ Peperomia hernandiifolia | Posted on January 31, 2023 ]

[ African Violet (Streptocarpus 'K's Lilac Infusion') | Posted on October 19, 2022 ]

Prolific from leaf propagations.
Note that the variegation on this plant is quite unstable in environmental conditions, and that blooms are extremely variable. Bloom sizes, color, and even the density and color of fantasy streaks or puffs vary greatly depending on temperature and light.

[ Abutilon (Callianthe picta 'Thompsonii') | Posted on October 8, 2022 ]

The variegation on this plant is caused by a virus.

[ Lobelia chinensis | Posted on September 20, 2022 ]

PLEASE! Do NOT plant this in ground! It will get EVERWHERE! It is such a pain to remove, even if you dig up most of the roots it still sprouts back from tiny sprouts! After removing it I even buried it with mulch, it STILL came back! Just please, be careful before you plant it. It is a very aggressive grower!
