This is one of the "strangler figs" that drops its seeds or birds drop the seeds into the crowns of other trees and these epiphytic plants send down long roots that root into the ground and become trunks of a tree that eventually kills the host tree. This Indian Banyan, from the south Asian subcontinent, is fast growing and becomes a large tree of many trunks that keep spreading with time, becoming much wider than tall. It grows about 60 to 90 feet high. The fairly large leaves are evergreen, shiny, leathery, and ovate to elliptic in shape. The tiny flowers are borne in leaf axils and bear orange to red, rounded, fleshy fruit in pairs, about the size of a cherry and are edible. It likes moist, rich soil the most. I've seen it occasionally in various spots planted in southern Florida in large landscapes It is sometimes used as a houseplant or bonsai.
