Gateway is tall, be sure and give it enough room. It does like to spread but slowly. I just pull out the outermost branches if I feel it is getting out of hand. Be sure and plant this where you want it to be the first time as the roots really go deep and it is really, really difficult to move. Seedlings will appear throughout the garden if you leave the dried seedheads, which I do, and do not deadhead after flowering. They are easily yanked out when small so I have never found this to be a problem. Another thing I have noticed is that this plant commonly wilts on hot summer days but recovers quickly come evening. The blooms attract lots of butterflies and bees.

'Gateway' seems to be the most sold form of Joe Pye from conventional, classic nurseries. It is a little bit more compact in habit with more compact, flattish flower heads than the mother species, but not by that much. Like the mother species it has leaves in whorls of 4 to 5 around a stem that is all purple or green with some purple spots. I could swear last year the stems on my specimen were purple but this year look green with spots. In August 2019 my specimen was 6 feet high was all fallen down so I had to stake it up. In 2020 I pruned it down about half way in mid-June to make it a bushier plant that does not need staking; that is a common procedure with tall perennials. It worked a bloomed in August 2020 being about 4 feet high and wider.
