    Solitary or offsetting Baja California endemic agave to 4-8 feet wide. Leaves are moderately rough and may be green, yellowish green, or gray-green, with small, close set teeth. From the cape region of Baja California Sur, a dry area with mostly late summer rainfall. This is the only species in section Campaniflorae.

    The former species A. capensis and A. promontorii were made a variety and subspecies of A. aurea respectively in 2015. The following taxa of A. aurea are recognized: Agave (Agave aurea subsp. aurea) (larger, solitary, flexible leaves, Sierra de la Giganta and Cape District), Maguey de La Laguna (Agave aurea subsp. promontorii) (larger, solitary, rigid leaves, Sierra la Laguna and Cape District), Cabo San Lucas Agave (Agave aurea var. capensis) (smaller, offsetting, Cape District).
