Clumping dwarf agave of Japanese origin which is presumed to be an unusual form or mutation of Agave potatorum/isthmensis. Rosettes reach about 5 inches max, but clumps can get bigger. Leaves are glaucous blue-green, and spines start out orange-red. The branches appear above the base of leaves, but often by the time the rosettes that grow out are close to full size, the original leaf is dead, dry and gone. A variety of attractive variegated cultivars are derived from this plant, which has gone by various other names (including other species names). Relatively common in cultivation due to its proliferous nature. Well behaved in smaller containers.
