Solitary or branching tree aloe from Madagascar to 10 feet or more. Branching may occur at the base or low down. Leaves are glaucous blue-green, long and narrow, and dead leaves are persistent on the stem. Inflorescences are multibranched and rebranched and spreading. Racemes are tall and laxly flowered. Flowers are deep red or pinkish. This species has been used in hybridization.

This plant has been confused with the very similar A. deinacantha, which apparently shares some territory in habitat. It is taller, with glaucous leaves, more highly branched inflorescences, and longer flowers. The resolution of this complex may require the erection of a new species representing a disjunct population from southern and western Madagascar.
