Hairy Mexican Echeveria with long stems and red flowers. All parts of the plant except the inside of the flowers are minutely pubescent. Leaves tend to be narrower than other hairy Echeverias. Flowers are red, with yellow mouths and interior. This species is found in Mexico, Oaxaca, Hidalgo. Distributed as ISI 495 in 1966. Provide strong light for best form and color. Sunlight will turn leaf edges and tips a reddish color.

Often misidentified in cultivation, and a parent of various hybrids. Hybrids with "Oliver" in the name ("Deren-Oliver", "Pulv-Oliver", "Set-Oliver", "Spruce-Oliver") are hybrids of harmsii; the Oliver comes from an the original genus name for this plant, Oliverella, under which it was described, and Oliveranthus, under which it was subsequently known.

For identification, look for extra-large scarlet flowers (not orange, not yellow except at the mouth and on the inside) on sparsely (1-2) branched inflorescences with racemes bearing few (1-3) flowers each.
