Terrestrial bromeliad from Argentina and Bolivia which grows as a mound of many small rosettes with spiky leaves. Over the course of decades these mounds can grow to impressive size and consume containers, benches, and rocks. Sun-loving and drought tolerant. Excellent companion plant for succulents. Roots grow inside the mounds so watering the plant, rather than the soil, can give good results in cultivation. Easy to propagate from rooted cuttings but slow growing (maybe 4 years to reach 8 inch size from a small cutting). Tubular green flowers peek out of the mounds. The flowers are green at the tip and yellowish green below that. This species is similar to D. lotteae (reddish green petals) and D. abstrusa (larger rosettes, different leaf texture). It was formerly filed in the genus Abromeitiella but was lumped with Deuterocohnia, despite having sessile flowers. It has apparently absorbed the former D. lorentziana (larger rosettes).
