Small, dark green or brown, geophytic plant with exaggerated tubercles and large purple-pink flowers. Tubercles are triangular in cross section and more than twice as long as wide. Only the tubercles usually rise above ground level. 1.6 to 3.5 inches wide.
Known from only a few places in the Valle de Rayones, Nuevo León, Mexico. No other Ariocarpus is found in this location. Endangered. Uncommon in cultivation.
The species name was originally spelled scapharostrus when it was described in 1930, but this was later changed to scaphirostris. It comes from the Greek word for boat (skaphos) and the Latin word for beak (rostrum), referring to the shape of the tubercles.
