Rare succulent from Madagascar with relatively few hairy, wide leaves that have serrated margins. This is one of very few Kalanchoes which flower from axillary buds and not terminally. It is polycarpic, like its close relative K. synsepala. It may bear more than four leaves, despite the species epithet.
This species has been confused with K. thyrsiflora (and by extension K. luciae) for some time, but it is a very different plant from these two, which have glaucous, glabrous leaves with smooth margins and flower terminally (thus are monocarpic). The vast majority of plants in cultivation labeled K. tetraphylla are probably K. luciae instead. K. luciae is orders of magnitude more common in cultivation than either of the other plants.
