Propagation: Seeds: | Stratify seeds: Once the seeds have entered dormancy, they'll germinate reliably (though over a long period) after cold, moist stratification (not less than 30 days of stratification). Repeat the warm-cold cycle if all the seeds haven't germinated. Needs specific temperature: Warm germinator - Freshly harvested seeds may germinate quickly (within 30 days) at room temperature. Depth to plant seed: Push the "sharp" end down into moist potting mix the depth of the seed. Leave the curly "tail" sticking up. Changes in humidity drive the seed deeper. Suitable for wintersowing Start indoors |
Propagation: Other methods: | Cuttings: Stem Other: take a stem cutting just below a node and remove the leaves from the bottom one or two nodes; roots will only develop from the region of a node; harden off the plants before transplanting them outdoors |

chelle | On November 7, 2014 | Transplanted Rock garden, N side, center tier, E of step-up log. |
MrsBinWY | On April 23, 2023 | Seeds sown 25 2022G seeds from the stream-side plant, in milk jug & set on back patio On 7-8-2023, uppotted the 1 seedling that germinated right away (already had a marble-sized caudex) and fridged the container. |
MrsBinWY | On August 7, 2022 | Transplanted On 8-7-2022, transplanted 1 in rocks under the cholla cactus. |
MrsBinWY | On August 22, 2020 | Transplanted 2 on west side of garage in front of Echinacea angustifolia - don't think either of these made it through the winter. Thinking that transplanting in spring is better for this species. Noting that, on 8-14-2021, planted 1 in old herb bed and 1 between west windows of garage |
MrsBinWY | On June 14, 2020 | Transplanted 1 in front of melon hoop, west side of door |
MrsBinWY | On January 30, 2020 | Potted up 1 from the 1-1-2020 sowing; ; 3 more on 5-22-2020; 2 more on 7-4-2020; 1 more on 7-18-202; 1 more on 2-6-21; 2 more on 2-14-2021 |
MrsBinWY | On January 30, 2020 | Seeds germinated 1 (pricked it out & potted it up the same day); observed 2 more on 5-10-20 (in the container I put outside); 1 on 2-4-21 (I'd left the container on the patio & brought it back in ~1-30-21); 2 more on 2-14-2021 |
MrsBinWY | On January 1, 2020 | Seeds sown Seems like fresh seeds will germinate quickly at room temp, but older seeds require cold, moist stratification. Experiment to see if seeds from summer/fall 2019 are fresh enough to germinate w/o cold stratification. Seeds were put into the fridge as they were gathered. Last 15 seeds from 2019G in milk jug @ room temp. Will put outside if no germination in 30, maybe 45, days. Just the one emerged (on 1-30-20). Moved the container to the patio on 2-17-20. |
MrsBinWY | On August 2, 2019 | Seeds germinated 1 (other one rotted) |
MrsBinWY | On July 11, 2019 | Seeds sown 2 freshly harvested seeds @ room temp. |
MrsBinWY | On June 27, 2019 | Transplanted On 6-27-2019, planted 2 by Penstemon virgatus 'Blue Buckle;' on 6-28-2019, added 1 more plant to the group. Only 1 of the plants made it there. It's been a really good performer, though. (So good that someone tried to remove it when it was blooming in 2020.) |
MrsBinWY | On June 23, 2018 | Transplanted On 6-23-2018, planted 1 in the herb bed. |
MrsBinWY | On June 20, 2018 | Transplanted On 6-20-2018, planted 1 in the brick planter next to the house. |
MrsBinWY | On June 1, 2018 | Transplanted On 6-1-2018, planted 1 by the side door steps. |
MrsBinWY | On May 26, 2018 | Transplanted On 5-26-2018, planted 1 along the stone path above the front rain garden (where the Physaria saximontana was). |
MrsBinWY | On April 8, 2018 | Seeds germinated 1 from the 1-14-17 sowing. Another one on 4-10-18. Note: I accidentally over watered this container while it was on the back patio (and ignored the problem for several weeks). It took several days in the house for the water level to evaporate, and the mix was still pretty soggy when these seedlings emerged. Another one from the 1-14-17 sowing was way up on 4-22-18. One from the 1-14-17 sowing just emerged 4-24-18. One more emerged 5-10-20. |
MrsBinWY | On April 7, 2018 | Potted up 2 (both had their 1st leaf) |
MrsBinWY | On March 26, 2018 | Seeds germinated Two seedlings from the 12-10-17 sowing up on 3-26-18. One seedling from the 12-10-17 sowing just emerging 4-6-19 (pricked out to its own little pot & put the container back out on the patio). Two from the 12-10-17 sowing up on 4-28-19. |
MrsBinWY | On December 10, 2017 | Seeds sown Last 6 seeds from Alplains. Soaked and wintersown in milk jug in garden hoop. Moved to room temp 3-16-18. |
MrsBinWY | On January 14, 2017 | Seeds sown Milk jug, cool room temp, seeds from Alplains, 6 (No germination as of 12-10-17; hold jug over & put out on back patio. Brought back in ~4-1-18.) |
